The Mt Albert Town Centre Upgrade was a high – profile project, with works taking place across two arterial roads and within a busy commercial area. Sponsored by the Albert-Eden Local Board, the project attracted considerable public and media interest, with many stakeholders requiring careful management throughout the duration of the project works.
The scope included upgrade works along Carrington and New North Roads and the construction of new parking and pedestrian areas, in volving upgraded bus stops, ‘Copenhagen’ cycle lanes, intersection upgrades, signalised pedestrian crossings and a revised on – road and off – road carparking/loading zone layout.
Works were completed with the following goals in mind:
- Reinvigorating Mt Albert and creating areal ‘town centre’ feel – delivering a space that is not only expansive and functional, but vibrant, responsible, and unique to its locality.
- Acknowledging the past and creating a legacy for the future – we delivered a product that emphasised the significance to local iwi and associated early European history. In doing so, we achieved a unique space that strengthens the community and supports local businesses.
- Committing to ecologically sensitive, sustainable delivery – our design included bio retention pits and rain gardens for stormwater management. During construction, we also recycled all existing asphalt and aggregate, minimising the environmental impact of our work.
- Integrating our design build/ECI design approach – we maintained open communication and active engagement, involving Auckland Council at key milestones in the design development for review and comment.
