Located in the centre of the Auckland Domain, the neo-classical War Memorial Museum is one of the city’s most iconic buildings. We reconstructed the museum’s entrance and surrounding areas, including new stairwells and ramps for improved pedestrian access, removal and replacement of the cenotaph and installation of a new memorial water feature. Our work also included concrete paving, paving slabs, street furniture, improved lighting and construction of a high quality road way.
Reflecting the War Memorial Museum’s status as a key Auckland landmark, we used high-specification materials including granite slabs and ornate water features and maintained a very high quality of workmanship to achieve the required finish.
The War Memorial Museum is one of Auckland’s premier tourist attractions, and any disruption to its operation was simply not an option. We maintained unrestricted and safe access to the museum entrance at all times, and carefully managed noise and vibration levels to minimise disruption. Higher than usual barriers kept the public safe from construction works and provided an important visual shield. Through careful construction planning and strong relationships with the museum’s operational team, we were able to allow key events such as ANZAC Day commemorations to continue as normal.
